Child Welfare Worker Core Training (Core) is offered by the Bay Area Academy to new child welfare workers and experienced workers who have not received formal training in the subject areas covered by the Core courses. Core provides training in skills required for workers to become competent in the subject areas identified by the California Social Work Education Center (CalSWEC). Core is also made available to staff who work in the public child welfare setting, such as Public Health Nurses, when authorized by the county where they work.
Core consists of a maximum of 24 days of training selected from the state recommended Standardized Core Training Curriculum. Additional information about California Child Welfare Competencies and
the Standardized Core Curriculum can be found at
http://calswec.berkeley.edu/CalSWEC/CommonCoreCurricCA_Line.html.
During the training year (July-June), the Bay Area Academy generally offers 6 cycles of the Core in different geographical areas of the Region. Academy Core typically covers 20 topics over a 2-month period. Workers who complete all of the classes are awarded a Certificate of Completion. Workers unable to complete the classes in one sequence can arrange to complete the classes required by their county in another sequence. BBSE credit is provided for individual Core courses.
